Your merchant account just got shut down with zero notice, here's how to figure out why and get processing again fast.

Imagine this: You wake up and check your payment dashboard and BAM, you see it: “Your merchant account has been closed.” There are no missed calls, no email with a warning or some kind of communication giving you a heads up. Only a notice that your payments have stopped and in some cases, your funds are being held too.

Mainstream processors like Square, Stripe, and PayPal typically use automated risk models to monitor and supervise accounts. These models flag things like a spike in sales volume, chargeback ratio increases, a change in products or offered services, or sometimes an industry that they just don’t want to support anymore. When their risk models detect something they don’t like, the account gets shut off immediately, often with no communication.
All of this is especially common for businesses that are categorized as high risk, like supplements, nonprofits, firearms and FFL, travel, subscription services, and CBD, among others. In most cases, the business did nothing wrong. It just got flagged because the processor decided the business was more work than it wanted to handle. This is exactly the kind of seller Redde Payments works with every day. So if you find yourself in this kind of situation, know that you’re not alone and it doesn’t mean that your business is bad.
Before you panic (even though panicking is kind of normal when your payments are on the line), log into your dashboard or try to check your email (including spam) for an OFFICIAL closure notice. You’re looking to find out:
Payment processors aren’t always forthcoming unless you ask directly. You can always try to call or email the request in writing. This information is needed for whatever comes next.
If your termination involved any chargebacks, suspected fraud or any serious terms violation, you may have been added to the Terminated Merchant File, known as the MATCH list (Member Alert to Control High-Risk Merchants). When this happens, you won’t typically be notified, so it’s worth confirming with your processor directly. Being placed on this list makes it incredibly more difficult to obtain a new merchant account, and merchants can be added for years unless the listing is corrected or removed.
This right here is where a lot of business owners get stuck. A traditional processor sees a MATCH listing and wants no part of that business. This is yet another spot where working with a processor built for high-risk and previously terminated sellers makes a real difference.
Being on the MATCH list doesn't mean game over. We work with merchants in exactly this spot every day. 👉 See if you qualify
A terminated account can sometimes mean funds will be held. It can be anywhere from 90 to 180 days or longer depending on the payment provider. It’s important to loop in anyone who handles your finances so you can plan around the gap. If you have any transactions that were in progress when the account was closed, you may need a new payment provider to complete those.
The single biggest thing that gets a business terminated again is trying to slide back in under a processor that doesn’t actually support its industry. If your business is in a high-risk category, you’ll need to work with a processor that says so openly and builds its underwriting process around it. Redde Payments specializes in exactly this! Merchants who have been dropped, limited, or flagged by mainstream processors can find relief in Redde. Being transparent about your business model from the very beginning keeps you from repeating this cycle.
Getting terminated without warning can feel like a personal attack, but for most high-risk merchants, it’s just an automated system doing what it was implemented to do: avoid risk at all costs. It doesn’t mean your business is inherently doing something wrong. It means you need a processor that actually understands your business instead of quietly hoping you don’t trip a wire. That right there is the gap Redde Payments exists to close.
Don't let a termination stall your business for months. Same-day approval is on the table. 👉 Get started with Redde!
